Race to the Junction |
This is an example of some of Bill's other projects. He built a live steam donkey engine similar to the ones he used to work on in the Tillamook forest in the early 1950's. The engine has its own video thanks to Merv Johnson who now owns this model. The video shows a setup of a spar tree and actually yarding of scaled size logs from a hillside.
The small black and white photo is of a Christmas present I received when I was about 5. The spar tree, yarder and a scale model log truck with all working parts was setup in a sand box next to our garage in Rockaway Oregon.
Bill also built dirt track race cars in the 1950's and he drove them until going out of bounds in one race. He was one of the first to use high tech fuel mixtures in his race car. He also rebuilt a WWII shaft drive Indian motorcycle used in the North African campaign (now donated to the military museum) and several 1957 Thunderbirds. His one nemesis was trying to fly radio controlled model airplanes (too many crashes!).
